Technology Infusion Philosophy
Technology infusion is a key component of the CICT program strategy.
Its principal objective is to foster the infusion of the computing, information, and communication sciences and technologies into missions, programs and projects that meet the long-term needs of NASA, as well as engage both industry and the universities in programs of joint technology development.
The approach taken to achieve these objectives includes obtaining capability/technology requirements from each of the NASA Enterprises, translating and mapping these required capabilities into the component CICT program domains. This provides the basis for evaluating the capabilities to be provided by the four CICT projects, as well as an indication of potential future infusion opportunities. In addition, this is a means to refine the CICT research portfolio in light of evolving requirements. Particularly important is the incentive to identify cross-project infusion opportunities, where more than one technology would be integrated into a given mission. Testbeds and technology demonstrations are also important to the infusion process by providing both a means to verify early predictions and demonstrate technology possibilities early enough in the development process to easily adapt to changing requirements. Underpinning the several elements of this approach is the need to maintain continuing contact with the CICT customers and stakeholders to assure clear understanding of technology needs and infusion opportunities.
Commercialization opportunities will also be exploited through Space Act Agreements, Cooperative Research Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding with industry. In addition, joint projects in high-risk areas will be pursued on a cost-sharing basis with industry and in close collaboration with government laboratories and academia. NASA will foster horizontal partnerships between NASA and multiple companies within the aerospace sector. The NASA CICT Program Office will also foster the vertical integration of collaborative teams between hardware suppliers, third-party software vendors, and members of the U.S. aerospace community. Lastly, the NASA CICT Program sponsors and conducts technical meetings and workshops and promotes the publication of scientific and technical papers to maintain the flow of technology from NASA to industry and academia.
